![]() So in terms of prevention/treatment it would be the stuff we all know - reduce inflammation (nsaids, steroids) and pro inflammatory mediators (antihistamines), avoid triggers (hot showers, any occlusive ointments) and encourage healing (hydration, sleep/melatonin). Irritated nerves can also release neurotransmitters that further increase inflammation which could kind of set up a vicious cycle of inflammation->pain/itch->inflammation that in theory would continue until those tiny damaged vessels heal from the burn and stop contributing to the inflammation that is freaking out the nerves. I think there’s something about that process that when you have tiny vessels damaged by the burn trying to dilate, releases even more inflammation mediators which in turn mess with the nerves in that same area. My reasoning is that showers are often the trigger for HI, and warm wet heat causes a combination of vasodilatation and increased blood flow to the skin. ![]() My theory is that HI is a combination of micro vascular damage and nerve inflammation. The mod is also not very active here, so feel free to use the report button if there are any issues. The sub may not be very active, (especially in the winter), but every post counts. The purpose of this subreddit is to hopefully become a nexus for those that have experienced this dermal oddity, share information, studies, news, and remedies. It typically happens with a mild sunburns well away from blistering, however more severe burns can result in an itch lasting almost a week. This is not sun poisoning, nor is it an allergic reaction. ![]() The condition can last anywhere from 12 to 48 hours, where the first day is always the worst, and is gone as if it had never shown up. It can be fierce enough to cause muscle spasms, but in most cases, the experience is best described as truly maddening. Reliably 2-3 days after a reasonably mild (non-blistering) sun burn. A swarm of fire ants biting you from the inside.Īcute, unimaginable, itching that occurs in short, intense waves. Described as having razor sharp sand paper rubbing beneath your skin.
